About Us

Fremont's newest public green space is the result of serendipity. Don and Hazel Hulbert lived at 4204 Baker Ave. N.W., and gardened their extra lot on the corner. When Hazel died in December 2003, a group of neighbors were able to see that the lot was purchased for the P-Patch Trust. A conservation easement was recorded guaranteeing that the site will be used for "community garden and open space in perpetuity."

With a Steering Committee the Friends of Hazel Heights P-Patch, was formed in 2005. Since then the group has done community outreach, fundraising, numerous events and many more activities to transform this humble lot into a thriving community garden.

The Site

The future P-Patch site is located in the western portion of the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle, WA. Situated mid-way up the Phinney Ridge slope, the site has exquisite views of the Olympic Mountains, and the Ballard/Magnolia cityscape. As this location's height provides for views it also contributes to some design challenges. The steep slope will require major infrastructure including retaining walls, stair access and terracing in order to maximize the space for gardening.

Site design began in 2005 with a community-based charrette hosted by Barker Landscape Architects. Attendees were mostly from the neighborhood and were charged with generating ideas on how to develop the site. Several designs were created and through three public meetings a preferred design was chosen.

In 2007, Barker Landscape Architects worked with the community to refine the preliminary master plan and prepare a final master plan from permitting and construction. Shown below is the final master plan and a 3-D model of the site after construction.

The Community

Fremont, otherwise known as "the center of the universe," is a tightly knit community of people who give back to their nieghborhood in many ways. The Hazel Heights P-Patch is a prime example where a group of caring and talented residents can create a meaningful project that will continue to benefit the area for years to come. To learn more your are welcome to join us at our next event and participate in making Hazel Heights P-Patch a reality.

The P-Patch Program

Named after the Picardo family, P-Patches are organic gardens located throughout Seattle. P-Patches allow urban residents a chance to garden and farm with other members of the community. There are over 50 P-Patches in the city with 2500 plots on 23 acres of land. Each year they supply 7 to 10 tons of produce to Seattle food banks and provide a beautiful garden aesthetic to the urban landscape. With a closer look you can discover that each P-Patch has its unique benefits, charachteristics and story. Hazel Heights will be no exception. We invite you to learn more about the City of Seattle's P-Patch program and the P-Patch Trust.
